Resident Spotlight

ANN MUMFORD

Ann Taylor Mumford moved from Ogden, Utah into the Courtyard at Jamestown on Veteran’s Day 2010 along with her husband, John. Two days later they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. This is the Mumford’s second time of living in Provo but since the first time was in 1949 Provo isn’t quite the same. They have lived all of their married lives in Utah from Logan to St. George including Ogden, Roy, and Bountiful. Ann was born February 27, 1925 in Plain City, Utah to Charles Ezra and Lillias Grieve Taylor. She was the youngest of eight children and grew up during the Great Depression. After graduating from Weber High School she attended Weber Junior College which had about “1000”

young women per every man in attendance since it was during the years of World War II. So dating opportunities were pretty slim. After the War ended and the soldiers came home, she met John Mumford at a party. Several weeks later he called but she couldn’t remember him until a friend reminded her that he was the guy who didn’t know how to break an egg except to smash it when they were making pancakes at the party. Ann and John were married November 15, 1946 in Salt Lake City and had three daughters, Suzanne, Deborah, and Rebecca. Their family now includes ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In 1958 at the age of 33 Ann decided in her words “what she wanted to be when she grew up”, so she returned to school at Weber State College in the nursing program. She worked at the Dee Hospital in Ogden in Labor & Delivery until 1967 when she returned again to Weber State to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She then taught high school English for several years until she once again returned to the academic hallways this time at the University of Utah. In 1974 she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Nursing and joined the faculty at Weber State to teach medical/surgical, psychiatric and obstetrics at Utah Technical College. When she retired she was the Director of the Weber State University nursing program at Utah State University. After spending ten frigid winters in Logan John and Ann packed up and moved to the desert climate of St. George to enjoy their retirement for the next twenty years. To keep from becoming a “bingo junkie”, Ann volunteered at the St. George Chamber of Commerce, the Huntsman World Senior Olympics and the St. George Marathon. She was also a member and officer of the American Association of University Women as well as the League of Women Voters. Snowmobiling, square dancing, golfing, and playing bridge were some of her favorite activities along with traveling about the United States in the

Mumford RV or anywhere else in the world that caught her interest. Her husband or any of her daughters can tell you about her independent and competitive nature. She always maintained a beautiful home and loved to make quilts, needlepoint, and holiday crafts.
